Mama’s Wall Street Studio, Production Manager Position

POSITION: PRODUCTION MANAGER The Aboriginal Mother Centre Society (“AMCS”) is currently looking for a strong, dynamic individual, with proven leadership and management skills in the area of production sewing and knitting, to assume the very important role of Manager of the Mama’s Wall Street Studio (MWSS). MWSS is the AMCS social enterprise business that also includes a training component. Reporting to the AMCS Executive Director, this individual will provide full-time leadership of the MWSS, its employees and volunteers, in the fulfillment of the MWSS business plan. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing the MWSS as a social enterprise according to a sound business and marketing plan. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The MWSS is located with the AMCS centre. Employment training was created through the social enterprise developments of Mama’s Wall Street Studio. While undergoing extensive renovation and expansion, the AMC suspended its program and service operations, and is now open again after 4 years. APPLICATION DEADLINE – March 2, 2012 JOB SUMMARY This is an exciting start-up position, with the overall work, eventually being divided into two or more positions as we grow. The MWSS manager acts as the chief lead for the social enterprise business, managing and directing all operations, programs and activities of the MWSS. The MWSS Manager acts as a key spokesperson of the MWSS to relevant stakeholders. The Manager is responsible for further developing and implementing the business plan, and is responsible for the preparation of annual budgets, strategic work and marketing plans; developing and evaluating work plans; developing grant proposals and fundraising strategies; when feasible the hiring, evaluating and supervising MWSS staff and trainees, and front-end office staff; reporting progress to the AMCS Executive Director and MWSS committee; and representing the business to all stakeholders, and future customers. CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS & CHARACTERISTICS The ideal candidate should possess:

* An excellent understanding of Aboriginal issues; and be keenly sensitive to, and knowledgeable about the many and diverse Aboriginal cultural practices and traditions; Experience with production work, background with fabric arts and manufacturing

* Knowledge of commercial sewing machines essential and mechanical aptitude an asset.

* Experience working with people, who are struggling to re-enter the workforce and cope with a variety of life challenges;

* At minimum, a university baccalaureate level degree, or relevant business work experience;

* Excellent oral and written communications skills, interpersonal skills, analytical thinking skills, and organizational skills

* A strong understanding and working knowledge of MS Office Suite software (including Excel, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint)

* A strong background in financial management; including the ability to interpret financial reports; create relevant work plans and corresponding budgets;

* A strong background in fundraising and grant/proposal writing; and some understanding of social enterprises;

* proven leadership ability, sound experience in reporting to a Board Governance Model

* Skills to work independently and manage others;

* A proven ability to mentor, motivate and empower; and

* The ability to effectively convey the ideas of others to stakeholders and build relationships to influence change.

Salary will be commensurate with background and experience. Preference will be given to those candidates of Aboriginal heritage.
