Cultural Outreach Worker
Lu’ma Native BCH Housing Society is seeking to fill the position of Cultural Outreach Worker on a Full-Time basis at the WESTERN program. This position is: Monday through Friday 8:30 am until 5:00 pm.
Working in and from the worksite, the Cultural Outreach Worker works under the direction of the Director of Supportive Housing Operations, the Cultural Health Coordinator and Management to provide culturally safe services, supports and guidance to residents. Observes and documents the residents’ cultural support needs, overall condition, and environment, reports significant and unsafe observations to Management.
Key Functions and Responsibilities:
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Supportive Housing Operations (or designate) the Cultural Outreach Worker will be responsible for but not limited to the following:
-Facilitate increased access to culture and cultural knowledge from a perspective that promotes healing for program participants;
-Act as a cultural resource and support as required;
-Facilitate talking, teaching, and healing circles;
-Provide space and opportunities for traditional medicines, arts and crafting;
-Connect with Elders and/or Traditional Healers, resource people to conduct ceremonies as appropriate to the geographical areas;
-Collaborate with community Elders, Traditional Healers, cultural resources and people and others;
-Act as both a service provider and referral agent for individuals, including advocacy for individuals to obtain culturally sensitive and relevant services outside of Lu’ma Native BCH Housing Society;
-Engage in collaborative community partnerships to promote traditional healing, cultural teachings and practice;
-Work closely with Lu’ma Native Housing Society’s Cultural Coordinator to facilitate a monthly program calendar of culturally relevant programming;
-Provide outreach services in the form of advocacy for program participants from a culturally informed lens;
-Performs other related duties as required.
Qualification Requirements
-Minimum of 1 year of work experience in an Indigenous cultural oriented environment;
-An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered;
-Valid Standard First Aid, Mental Health First Aid, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, Naloxone, and Food Safe 1 certification;
-Valid Class 5 or higher BC Driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle for work duties;
-Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills;
-Knowledge of community resources and services, knowledge of Indigenous culture and world views.
-Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, to work independently with minimal direction, to problem solve, to take initiative, to anticipate potential problems/conflicts and take appropriate actions, to organize and prioritize work, and to meet deadlines.
-Demonstrated ability to establish satisfactory work relationships working positively and collaboratively with the public and other employees, to deal tactfully and effectively with co-workers, public and staff from other agencies,
-Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Hours and Remuneration:
Full-Time position, 8.5 hours per day with a 0.5 hour unpaid meal break, 8:30 am until 5:00 pm; Monday to Friday.
Wage: $30.87 per hour plus Statutory holidays. All Regular Full-Time team members are enrolled into the generous Employer paid Benefits package and optional RRSP match to 3.5% following a 3-month disqualification period. Vacation is earned at 6% of gross earnings and is accessible after 1 year of employment. Sick and other Paid Leaves awarded on a pro rata basis.
