Lu’ma is a Coast Salish word for “new beginnings.” Lu’ma offers a wide range of programs, services and other initiatives aimed at alleviating poverty, improving the overall health of the urban Indigenous community and responding to the evolving needs of Indigenous peoples. 

Position Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the Program Manager, the Building Service Worker will be responsible for the general maintenance, cleanliness and upkeep of the supportive housing facility and equipment.

 

Key Responsibilities:

As a Building Service Worker, your primary responsibilities focus on maintaining the cleanliness and overall upkeep of the facility. Key duties include but are not limited to the following:

 

Janitorial Duties:

-Clean floors and carpets;

-Dispose of refuse;

-Clean common area bathrooms;

-Clean windows, baseboards, doors and walls;

-Dust/polish furniture and fixtures;

-Clean pods or suites at turnover;

-Assist with pest management, treatment and remediation;

-Maintain cleanliness of common areas and grounds;

-Maintain the cleanliness of the immediate grounds, including the front sidewalk and walkways.

 

Maintenance Duties:

-Perform minor electrical, plumbing, carpentry and minor drywall repairs;

-Install sinks, toilets and faucets;

-Auger toilets and sinks;

-Install or adjust door and window hardware and locks;

-Minor drywall patching;

-Replace light fixtures, switches, receptacles, bathroom fans, hood fans and batteries;

-Prep floors for installation of new flooring or carpeting;

-Report any damage and/or problems in the building to the Program Manager;

-Ensure the safety of common spaces and grounds including the perimeter; 

-Ensure compliance with  WorkSafe BC regulations, including maintaining a safe work environment 

 and following safety protocols;

-Renew WHIMIS training annually;

-Adhere to WHMIS regulations, including proper labelling and storage of hazardous materials;

-Maintain an up-to-date SDS (Safety Data Sheet) manual;

-Manage the inventory of all cleaning supplies and equipment;

-Participate in safety meetings and training sessions as required;

-Report safety hazards and incidents promptly to the Program Manager;

-Conduct regular safety inspections and ensure compliance with all safety regulations;

-Coordinate with program manager all relevant and required formal inspections including fire and safety inspections.

 

Qualifications/Skills & Abilities:

-Building Service Worker certificate is preferred;

-A valid Occupational First Aid Level 1, Mental Health First Aid, WHMIS, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention or MANDT and Naloxone certificate is required;

-Physical ability to operate heavy industrial grade cleaning equipment;

-Physical ability to carry out heavy cleaning and ability to lift up to 23 kgs;

-General maintenance skills;

-Demonstrated ability to be organized, and carry out work with independence and the ability to work cooperatively and effectively under general supervision;

-Thorough understanding of standards of maintenance, relevant Municipal Bylaws, WorkSafeBC processes and requirements.

-Ability to work effectively with program staff, residents and community partners;

-Ability to be nonjudgmental in trying situations;

-All positions are subject to Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record clearance.

 

Hours and Remuneration:

Full-time position, 40-hours work week with a half hour unpaid meal break; 8:30 am until 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday.

Wage $28.61 per hour. Regular Full-Time employees are enrolled into the Benefits plans and programs after a 3-month disqualification period. Optional enrollment into an RRSP plan with an Employer match to 3.5%. Vacation will be earned at six percent of gross earnings. Vacation is accessible after one year of employment. Sick and other paid leaves awarded on a pro rata basis.
