Lu’ma is a Coast Salish word for “new beginnings.” Lu’ma offers a wide range of programs, services and other initiatives aimed at alleviating poverty, improving the overall health of the urban Indigenous community and responding to the evolving needs of Indigenous peoples. 

Lu’ma Native BCH Housing Society is seeking to fill the Full-Time Homemaker position in Supportive Housing.

Position Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the Program Manager, the Homemaker provides non judgemental support to residents in terms of safety, sanitation and reporting maintenance items in units as required. Provides assistance to team members in routine and extraordinary cleaning as needed.   

 

Key Responsibilities:

-Assists tenants to keep their rooms clean, decluttering, prepare for pest control, do laundry, and cleans common areas including laundry rooms, entranceway, stairs as needed.

-Encourages tenants to participate in activities that promote social and recreational inclusion such as community kitchens, tenant meetings, support groups, special events, walking and or other physical and social activities.

-Documents and updates all relevant information about known care plans, medication and procedures put in place to achieve tenants’ safety and comfort.

-Ensures all relevant information is passed on in staff overlap, for follow up.

-Researches and provides Residents with information about health issues and other resources, as requested

-Maintains respectful, effective, open and honest communication with Residents, co-workers and direct supervisor.

 

Qualifications/Skills & Abilities:

-A degree, diploma or certificate in a related subject and/or relevant skill-based training;

-Knowledge of the Residential Tenancy Act;

-Minimum one-year experience working as a front-line support worker with people who have complex needs and who are struggling with poverty and homelessness;

-Must be open to working with people who are struggling with substance use and/or mental & spiritual wellness;

-Must understand and be comfortable working within a Harm Reduction framework;

-Ability to work effectively with program staff, community partners and residents, including being non-judgmental in trying situations demonstrating excellent interpersonal skills;

-Knowledge of Cultural Safety practices;

-Ability to work under pressure and manage stresses and crisis is required;

-Valid Occupational First Aid Level 1 (or equivalent), Mental Health First Aid, WHMIS, Food Safe Level 1 (or equivalent), Non-Violent Crisis Intervention/MANDT, and Naloxone certificates are required;

-All positions are subject to a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record review

Hours and Remuneration:

• Full time position, 10:00am until 6:30 pm; Mondays to Fridays (8.5 hours per day with 0.5 unpaid meal break) 

• Wage $28.61 per hour. Regular Full-Time employees are enrolled into the Employer paid Benefits plans and programs after a 3-month disqualification period. Optional enrollment into an RRSP plan with an Employer match to 3.5%. Vacation will be earned at 6% of gross earnings. Vacation is accessible after 1 year of employment. Sick and other Paid Leaves awarded on a pro rata basis.
